Recently Ad Week chose their agency of the year LINK. As useful and interesting as that is to creative professionals there were many nuggets of “read between the lines” info in the piece. For us most notably was a trend we’ve been seeing with agencies for a while and can also point to how this characterization has trickled down:

They [the 2 agencies who won] both posted impressive revenue gains, growing mainly by expanding business from existing clients, which just happens to be the smarter way to build an agency.”

We’ve seen agencies tracking towards using the same handful of professionals (rock stars in the industry) and/or their stable of creative talent they continually rely upon; making it more competitive to attract these agencies to pick new talent. As they say, it starts at the top and trickles down.
