Europe Leading Creative Innovation?

Last week I had a handful of meetings where I was shown creative works (video, illustration, photography) by stateside folks and those by our friends across the Atlantic. My main response continues to be “the Europeans are kicking ass!” The Europeans sensibility has always had an enduring place in the creative arts, but the gap seems to be increasing dramatically. Maybe it’s the “slash and sell” attitide rampant in the US economy seen in the magazine industry (a chunk of Time, Inc.) are cutting costs (jobs) and selling themselevs for the quick buck to long-term-thinking Europeans (Bonnier of Stockholm).

Many stateside creatives say they don’t have the time to experiment with new ideas, that they can only afford to take well-paying jobs as costs continue to grow. This is trouble. As brands seek user-generated-content (because it’s CHEAPER then anything an agency can provide – who knows about “better”) the realm of creative product is under fire, and has to transform itself. Maybe we should be turning our eyes to Europe, as the Europeans have always valued good ideas over the obvious cliches. Whatever the answer is, we know something has to give, and right now it looks like the US creative economy is on the verge of bankruptcy.
