About The Image reports:

“Olympus Corporation has decided to enter the stock photo business. Olympus, Japan’s well established photography equipment manufacturer has agreed to a collaboration with the Kyoto-based Artefactory Corporation, a digital photographing company known for its art images of important treasures of Japan. According to persons familiar with the deal, Olympus will acquire a 47.4% stake in Artefactory.
The two companies plan to launch “OADIS” (Olympus Artefactory Digital Imaging Service) with approximately 200,000 downloadable images by the end of June, 2007.  Artefactory’s longstanding collaboration with the owners and copyright holders of the objects and sites featured in their archive will allow them to license the images to end-users without having to go through a complicated permissions process. The company aims to have 600,000 images by 2009 by which time the company says it will have added more conventional commercial stock photo subjects, such as travel and nature.

OADIS expects license fees for their images to range from Y.5,000 to Y.200,000, and will average about Y.35,000 (+/-US$292.)  They will make images available at 350 dpi and 72 dpi.”
