Millions of Photo Prints Belong to Corbis (aka Bill Gates)
By jason - up to 2007 (archived) • Apr 10th, 2007 • Category: Loose Ends, News for Creatives (archives)from NYTimes — Some pictures are American Classics, engrained in our cultural mindset; Rosa Parks, Marilyn Monroe, JFK, Kathryn Hepburn etc, but this iconic images are all within the Corbis Company archive. Corbis had bought over the years and obtained over 11 million prints and negatives in the legendary Bettmann archive.
Anyone wanting to use one of those classic images “in a book or on a Web site must first license it from Corbis, a corporation founded and owned by Mr. Gates, who is better known for starting Microsoft. Since that first purchase, Corbis has spent tens of millions of dollars acquiring image collections and other companies, hired more than 1,000 people and set up two dozen offices worldwide. Although Corbis says it brings in some $250 million a year in sales, it has yet to turn a profit.”
