“In the world of photojournalism, there is a noticeable difference between the quality of images generated by a passerby with a camera phone and the photojournalist with a digital SLR that cost thousands of dollars. But elsewhere, photographers are finding themselves hard-pressed to delineate the distinction between “professional” and “amateur.” Is it a measure of experience and training? Equipment and technology? Or something as simple as market power?
Stock photography in particular has raised the biggest questions about what exactly makes a pro. Or, rather, the growing rift between traditional stock houses like Getty and Corbis and a new breed of image provider termed “microstock” has forced designers and photographers alike to reevaluate the relationship between their respective businesses.” Read the rest here
