Old But Interesting News: New York Times Ran Retouched Flood Picture
By jason - up to 2007 (archived) • Aug 27th, 2007 • Category: Eye Candy“The New York Times published an editors’ note April 18 acknowledging that a six-column color photo in the April 17 paper had been digitally retouched.
A photograph on the front of the Metro Section, showing a house washing away in floodwaters in Connecticut, was taken by a Times staff member who is not a staff photographer. The staff member retouched the picture to eliminate a flare caused by using a flash while shooting through the window of a train. He was identified in the photo credit as Roger W. Strong.
The retouching effort left behind some obvious signs of digital cloning. A patch of siding on the side of the house is noticeably out of alignment with the rest. The use of the retouching tool also left an out-of-place circular shape over one of the house’s windows.
The editors’ note said the alteration was in violation of the paper’s policy and editors would not have printed the photo if they were aware it had been retouched.
The Times’ note comes the same week as another newspaper, The Toledo Blade, disclosed that it published dozens of photos that were digitally altered by photographer Allan Detrich in the last few months. Detrich resigned from the paper. “
