“At the PMA trade show, FotoNation’s eerily lifelike dummy and android team demonstrated a raft of new technologies that are ready to be implemented in the cameras and camera phones of tomorrow.
maging technology company FotoNation and its team of disconcertingly lifelike dummies demonstrated a range of new automatic technologies at the 2008 PMA trade show in Las Vegas, NV. The technologies are expected to make their way into cameras and camera phones later in 2008 and in 2009. FotoNation supplies in-camera software to numerous manufacturers. According to the company, at least two of every three digital cameras sold today contain its technology. FotoNation also announced at PMA that it is being acquired by Tessera, a provider of miniaturization technologies, including camera phone optics.
FotoNation dummy Rod Cone, whose eyes are designed to replicate the characteristics of human eyes, demonstrated the company’s redeye correction technology, Red. The current version of the technology has already been implemented in cameras, camera phones, printers, kiosks, and software available from a variety of manufacturers. Red 2.0, which can be expected to turn up in products later in 2008, adds golden-eye correction to its capabilities. As FotoNation human and vice president of marketing Eric Zarakov explained to us, using a flash sometimes results in turning subjects’ pupils a golden hue instead of the more common red. According to Zarakov, this is caused in some cases by the angle at which light from the flash strikes the eye, and in others by the pigmentation of the subject’s optical nerve. The optical nerve reflects light from a flash to cause the red- or golden-eye effect. FotoNation’s research indicates that people with East Asian skin tones are most prone to golden eye.”
