“Updated 5:20 p.m. with results from later auctions Tuesday.
Big-spending bidders set several auction records Monday night at Sotheby’s, where a collection of 19th and 20th century photography raked in a total of $8.9 million. Photo auctions Tuesday brought in another $8.4 million in bids.
At the Monday auction, Sotheby’s sold 63 of the 68 prints offered from The Quillan Collection, a photography collection assembled over the last 20 years for the Quillan Company, an investment firm.
It was the first, and likely the biggest, of several photo art auctions scheduled this week at the major New York auction houses.
Ten lots sold for more than a quarter million dollars (including the buyer’s premium) on Monday night, and bidders set record prices for Richard Avedon, Hans Bellmer, Bill Brandt, László Moholy-Nagy (for a photograph), August Sander, Paul Strand and Edward Weston.”
