wise elephant, making it happen

Q: Does Kathleen Parker’s “Rise of the Twitterati” in the Washington Post editorial page today signify that Twittering is no longer cool?

A: This question comes from Twitter, from Dennis D. McDonald, a technology consultant. There is so much buzz about Twitter these days, about the best way to use it, who is using it, and why. Mainly what I see in this buzz are traditional PR and marketing rock-stars carving out their piece of the audience on Twitter to manipulate Twitter for their particular usage. Who blames them! That’s what all business minded folks do really, try to get market share and influence people to either buy good/services or act a specific way. Call it a new form of advertising.

BUT…

As to Twitter no longer being cool…if you do a search on almost any word at http://search.twitter.com you’ll see there are thousands of individuals using Twitter in the way that matches what they want to do and who they are. There are loose affiliations, small groups, bigger groups, lone wolfs, you name it; all types of folks talking/sharing/communicating. Twitter is beyond a label, its a behavior, like using the phone or texting.

More importantly, in regards to the Washington Post piece, Twitter has become a new type of newspaper (watch out newspapers!), a ticker-tape of information as the news of the world rushes by in quick sound-bites which can be culled, using software, to show me what I want to read and from whom. And that is very cool.
