Q: My tiny crowdsourcing/social capitalism client is pondering whether small businesses still want to/can do good in this economy.
By Jason Moriber • Dec 9th, 2008 • Category: Ask the Wise ElephantA: This question is from Twitter (from @merredith), though I started on a similar Q/A before this more specific question was posted. The initial question was: In this economy, although I want to run a “good” business (healthy, wholesome, organic food market), should I reconsider and open a not-as-”good” business, a donut shop (high fat, unhealthy, but delicious and everybody likes donuts)?
The answer: Yes, there is a lot of “good” small businesses can do in this economy, it will be harder to do, and only the passionate will break their way through, but the audience/market is there if the will is. The market might be smaller now than it was a year ago, but that’s true for everything now (even donuts). It also might be harder to find that audience, but if you’re message/service/goods resonates with what they need/want then I think the channel to do good is there.
A simpler answer might be to combine the two and open an organic donut shop.
