Advocates want ban on smoking broadened [in Indianapolis]
By Jason Moriber • Jan 14th, 2009 • Category: IndianaCity is PhenomenalWhen I lived in NYC we thought the ban on smoking in bars would be the end of the world. The sublime, erotic, romantic, stinky-dive nature of all things good would come to a horrible end! What would we do! Didn’t happen. The opposite did. More people seemed to be going out, new people. People acted more free. The bartenders seemed more chipper, more attentive. Plus, now, those who chose to smoke became a fraternity, a posse, a select group that hung together just outside the venue, sparking new friendships, dates, whatever else.
Plus the bar-patrons didn’t stink so bad anymore. My clothes were safe for another day, my eyes, my hair, my face.
Still, the biggest plus was the data, heart-attack rates went down, cancer rates went down. And that makes it all worth it.
