Throughout the IMCPL system, 81 new computers will be installed, bringing the number of public Internet computers available for free access to 619. The total cost of the project is approximately $187,000.
All library locations will include power outlets for patrons to plug in their own laptop computers. In addition to providing Internet access, library computers are equipped with various word processing applications.
For the first six months of 2009, IMCPL experienced a 24% increase in the number of computer hours logged by patrons on its public computers compared to the same period in 2008. More people are coming to the library to do job searches, file unemployment claims, and learn basic computer skills.
IMCPL also offers free computer classes on Internet job searching, resume creation, word processing and other applications, and basic computer skills. For a listing of upcoming classes, visit www.imcpl.org or contact a neighborhood branch library.
